About
Evan Helchen is a Master’s candidate in Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of Illinois Chicago, graduating in May 2026. As a Data Analyst at the Great Cities Institute (GCI), Evan works primarily within the Urban Spatial Structure Lab, where he has been instrumental in defining research priorities and piloting new studies. He specializes in leveraging R and spatial analytics to produce data-driven insights for key community partners, including the MacArthur Foundation, Steans Family Foundation, and the City of Chicago.
Evan’s approach to urban research is informed by five years of experience as a data analytics consultant. During this time, he developed a deep proficiency in data visualization through the daily development of Power BI and Tableau dashboards for a diverse range of clients. By bridging this private-sector technical rigor with academic research, he translates complex datasets into actionable tools for urban policy and historical inquiry.
Evan holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics and Business Analytics from Miami University’s Farmer School of Business.
