Immigration is transforming the face of America—from rural areas to urban centers. The 2010 and 2011 Chicago Area Studies explored how immigration and the experiences of immigrants are unfolding in an increasingly important context: new suburban destinations. In 2010 and 2011, a team of faculty and graduate students, under the auspices of the Chicago Area Study, embarked upon a large-scale data collection effort in 6 communities in Lake County, Illinois. These efforts resulted in a rich source of survey, ethnographic, and in-depth interview data that can shed light on interpersonal and institutional dynamics of the immigrant experience in the suburbs. This program will feature short research presentations by faculty and graduate students who are analyzing these data, as well as information on the wealth of CAS data that may be used by other scholars interested in exploring these topics.
About the Chicago Area Study
The Chicago Area Study is a biennial study that collects survey data on life in the Chicago metropolitan area. Its purpose is to collect original social science data that inform policymaking and social science theory, provide hands-on methods training to students in survey methods, and fund faculty research on pressing issues in the metro area.
